Not exactly proper urbex (the Royal Greenwich Heritage Trust kindly let me in to have a look), but here are some pics taken yesterday inside Charlton’s (probably) Inigo Jones-design Summer House. Converted to public toilets and unused since the early 1990’s, the Summer House is now under restoration; full story on the Charlton Champion.

Hi, I know those toilets very well, as my late grandfather was the RBG, although he would have disliked the Royal appendage, as we used to go underneath the summerhouse, as it had a bad rat infestation and he would bait the areas. He was the superintendent of building works. It was pretty scary, and dark. After a brief illness, he finished working for RBG and finished his working life at the toilets, to complete his full pension. I must have been 8-10 years of age.
Great to see the building being restored as I lived across the road in Springfield Grove. I hope this is kept as a heritage site, for the public and not sold off.
Thanks for the comment – great to hear from someone who knew it before it closed! I think having it back in use will make a big difference to that corner of Charlton.
It’s an asset of Royal Greenwich Heritage Trust now, so I think it would be difficult for it to be sold off.
