A nice end-of-autumn Saturday afternoon in Folkestone; using the excuse of the Triennial to visit, but mostly mooching along the harbour arm. All shot on my Fuji XT10 with a Fuji XF35mm f1.4 lens.

Flowers outside the florists in Blackheath village, autumn 2017

Across to Blackheath Village first thing Saturday for a haircut. Nice autumn light shining on the display outside the florists by the station.

Over to Charlton Park next on Charlton Champion duties to photograph the official opening of the new skatepark, built by Greenwich Council and funded by developers taking over the old skatepark site in Woolwich (amid much inevitable controversy).

Full set of skatepark pics at The Charlton Champion.

I’ll definitely be back there soon to take more photos; the light wasn’t ideal (sudden brightness between downpours as Storm Brian passed over), and a longer lens would be better  – I had assumed that my 14mm would be ideal for capturing the whole skate bowl scene but, as always seems to happen when I use a wide angle lens, it was quickly abandoned for the 35mm. Next time I’ll take the 60mm for more portraits.

The evening was spent playing guitar with Ronnie Ripple & The RipChords at Genesis cinema in Mile End; a fun gig performing after a screening of Back to the Future. I really should have used it as an excuse to face down my 30 year fear of playing the intro and solo for Johnny B Goode, though. Hopefully there’ll be another chance there soon.

London Skyline Sunset

I’ve never been massively excited about sunset pictures, but it’s hard to resist when Greenwich Park is a short evening bike ride away and the sky looks like this.

In other news, I now have a Facebook page for my photography; ‘Like’ it, if you like.

Not exactly proper urbex (the Royal Greenwich Heritage Trust kindly let me in to have a look), but here are some pics taken yesterday inside Charlton’s (probably) Inigo Jones-design Summer House. Converted to public toilets and unused since the early 1990’s, the Summer House is now under restoration; full story on the Charlton Champion.

Fuji XT10, Markets, SE18, south east London, Woolwich, Woolwich Public Market

A Friday morning nose around Woolwich Public Market. It’s a pretty sorry site: mostly abandoned and semi-derelict, a few stalls clinging on by the front entrance, and all ultimately awaiting demolition for the Spray Street redevelopment. There were briefly plans to turn it into a street food market in the interim, but these fell away pretty quickly; a shame, as the space (once cleaned up!) would have been perfect for it, and would have given people a much-needed reason to visit and spend money in Woolwich town centre.

A Saturday afternoon interlude spent peering over the edge of the Thames path near Charlton.

See the full set of ‘Semi-submerged shopping trolleys of the Thames foreshore near Charlton, south-east London: a study’ on my portfolio website.

PS. I’m working towards making a much wider range of my pictures available to purchase as prints (all on high-quality, archival paper). If there are any photos on this site that you’d like to own as a print (prices start at £40), please get in touch.

(I’m also always interested in print swaps, if you make paintings/photos/linocuts/woodcuts/screenprints/similar – just get in touch!)

A combined failure of Southeastern Trains (derailed freight train near Lewisham) and the Jubilee line (failed train at Stratford) scuppered my plans to go into town and meet a friend for lunch; instead, turfed out of North Greenwich station, I took a walk around the northern tip of Greenwich peninsula and found myself at Victoria Deep Water Terminal.

One of a small number of protected wharves, the Deep Water Terminal is used for – as far as I can tell – loading and/or unloading of aggregates; it’s an entirely different world from the O2 arena around the corner, Canary Wharf over the river, and the new flats that are (slowly) appearing around the rest of the of the peninsula. Long may it run.

Deptford Creek January 2017

20170114-20170114-_dsf2888

A quick look at Deptford Creek from behind the Trinity Laban dance centre on a cold Saturday afternoon. The second shot shows the charred remains of a ‘Ham’ class minesweeper boat built in 1954 and more recently used as an arts venue, gutted by fire in the first week of January. A sorry sight.

Another shot from a week later, showing the Ravensbourne at very low tide.
