Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, Northumberland – August 2018

beach, Newbiggin, northumberland, public art, sculpture, Sean Henry, seaside, summer, the couple

A post-heat wave day on the Northumberland coast. The sand still hot underfoot, the water on the cool side, and the sky over the sea changing constantly. The sculptures are Sean Henry’s The Couple – two figures on land, then again on a platform 300 metres out to sea (Britains’s only offshore sculpture, apparently). I’m not sure that the future will judge this kind of public sculpture kindly, but I think I’ve seen worse (hello Kissing Couple in St. Pancras station).

So, how was your Christmas and New Year? Mine was very pleasant: spent mostly in the north-east of England visiting family; busy enough to not get round to posting any pictures here (though some went on my Instagram).

Back in London and it’s 2017 and, for the first time since 2001, I find myself a man of leisure (ie without a job – don’t worry, I won’t starve for a little while). Spending a few days sorting out domestic admin before getting stuck into the world of freelance/contracting, I took a trip to Woolwich on a wet Monday.

Peter Burke’s Assembly sculptures were looking good in the rain; not much else was, to be honest (even the Salvation Army seem to have moved on), but there’s always something interesting to see in Woolwich at least.

Part of my recent admin efforts have been:

  • a new website for my photographic portfolio, still a work in progress, but I’m finding the Pixelrights platform to be very good so far.
  • a new Twitter account for my photography (and not for moaning about the council etc…).

Take a look, let me know what you think – it’s always good to get some feedback. And Happy New Year!

A half-term afternoon at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park: always a deep pleasure, even on an afternoon with a resolutely un-photogenic brightish grey sky.

A bit of time to kill before going to Caught by the River Thames in Fulham spent photographing around the Thames path on the north-west corner of Greenwich peninsula. It’d be a lot easier to make decent photos round there if it wasn’t for the miles of metal fencing, but it remains an interesting place to walk and photograph.

The sculpture is Alex Chinneck’s A bullet from a shooting star, part of the The Line – a sculpture trail running across both sides of the river, that I really should investigate more.
