The view from Greenwich Park, Queen's House, Canary Wharf skyline
A Sunday afternoon walk to Greenwich Park, through the flower garden, past the bandstand to say hello to my uncle playing piano with a Big Band on the bandstand, then on to the Wolfe statue for the classic view over the park looking north.

One day – one day – I’ll pull together some proper then-and-now photos taken from this spot over the last 15 years. But this is how it looks now: the grass in the park very slightly greened up and recovered after weeks without rain; the Isle of Dogs and Canary Wharf stopped at this particular moment of development, a brief pause before the glass and steel buildings spread further out from Canada Square. I’ll no doubt be back there in the coming weeks – maybe I’ll try a then-and-now then.

Shot from Charlton Road, overlooking the A102 Blackwall Tunnel approach. The Olympic Stadium is already staring to disappear behind new developments (view full-size, squint and you might see the top of it just to the left of the Orbit). At some point I guess we can expect the Millennium Dome to get similarly obscured.

Here’s a similar view from 2010:

No buildings on the Peninsula between Dome and Greenwich Millennium Village, no cable  car, no sign of the Olympic developments. I just wish the 2010 shot included the “eco” Sainsbury’s which has since been demolished (unthinkable at the time).

Putting this together tells me I should a) get a long lens for my Fuji, b) take these more often (and catalogue them better in my archives).

In the marginal zone on the edge of Docklands, where the first round of 21st century redevelopment sits slightly apart from the last round of post-war regeneration, and the post-Olympics/Crossrail changes to come.

Becher, cable car, East London, photography, Tate & Lyle

Too contrasty to really qualify as being in the style of Bernd and Hild Becher. A pleasing shape to find when in West Silvertown by accident, anyway.

A shot looking to the right from the same position points to some of the reasons the cable car (I can’t, for some reason, stand the London bloggers’ ‘dangleway’ sobriquet) hasn’t proved to be wildly popular yet:

It’s hard to argue that the cable car isn’t fun, though; and this morning it felt particularly peaceful. There were other passengers using it, but not many. You’d be hard pressed to go up there with and camera and not get some half descents shots, at least
